The American Legion's Junior Shooting Sports Program is a gun safety education and marksmanship program that provides the basic elements of Safety, Education, Enjoyment and Competition. It meets a continually growing need by providing well-organized and concise instruction in proper gun safety, gun handling and respect and marksmanship.

Participants in the Junior Shooting Sports Program can be of either gender, ages 14 through 20. Handicapped youth are encouraged to participate.

It is a 3 part program that combines a basic marksmanship course, qualification awards and air rifle competition.

The basic marksmanship course is a comprehensive instruction package for the beginning shooter with little or no marksmanship experience. Gun safety and marksmanship fundamentals are taught through a balanced mix of short lecture or discussion followed by hands-on activity.

Graduates of The American Legion's basic marksmanship course can enroll in one of 2 qualification awards programs offered by the National Rifle Association. The 2 programs are the NRA Junior ROTC Qualification Course and the NRA Marksmanship Qualification Courses for Rifle and Pistol. These programs provide the shooter with a starter patch and the opportunity to earn Expert, Sharpshooter, Marksman 1st Class, Marksman and Pro Marksman patches.

The competitive part of the Junior Shooting Sports Program encompasses shooting competition for several skill levels. Competitive shooting opportunities are provided through:

All training and marksmanship make use of the Daisy Model 853 and Model 853 C air rifles.
