The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, mutual-help, and community service organization which now numbers 2.4 million – men and women – in more than 14,000 American Legion Posts worldwide.  These Posts are organized into 55 Departments – one each for the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico, and the Philippines.

Post Membership Transfers

Each member is unique and each Post is unique in it's own way.  Big or Little. Lots of activities or just a few. Find the Post that fits you, where you can belong.  Members can change Posts.  You are not restricted to the Post in your town or area.

Wish to change Posts but not sure how or who to contact?  Fill out the form and we will forward your request to your desired Post so they can contact you.  (Adjutants. This is NOT the form for the Post to transfer members. That is the Member Data Form in Resources. This form is for Members to ask for transfer.)

Each Post shall be the judge of the qualification of its members provided such members are eligible for membership in The American Legion, and each Post may set such other reasonable standards of qualification for membership as it may determine. Race, religion, sex, creed, or national origin shall not be a barrier to membership. Each Post shall apply standards uniformly. (NC Constitution, Article 3)
